AIRSHOW MASTERING COMPLETES NEW SACD TITLES FOR GROOVE NOTE, CAVI RECORDS
July 27, 2002 - Boulder, CO Airshow Mastering, known for bringing the latest digital technology to its award-winning work on acoustic, jazz and classical recordings, recently completed new Super Audio CDs (SACDs) for U.S. indie Groove Note and Brazil-based Cavi Records. Airshow is one of a handful of studios worldwide that have helped pioneer the SACD format. In her first recording for Groove Note, singer Eden Atwood explores the rhythms of Brazil in Waves: The Bossa Nova Session. Slated for end-of-summer release, Waves combines bossa nova standards with Brazilian-flavored versions of pop classics by such greats as Duke Ellington and Lennon & McCartney. Waves is a hybrid SACD, featuring both a standard CD stereo mix and a high-resolution, surround sound version. The recording was mixed from multi-track analog tape to the Sony DSD (Direct Stream Digitalô) recording system on which the SACD format is based. EQ and mastering were done on Airshow's Sony Sonoma workstation. Groove Note has adopted the SACD format as the label's preferred audiophile digital format. Brazilian guitarist Andre Geraissati's Canto das Aguas on Cavi Records is also a hybrid SACD, with a high-resolution, stereo mix and a separate stereo mix that plays on standard CD players. The album, recorded at 192k/24bit resolution in Brazil, was shipped as a data file for the Sonic Solutions HD workstation to Airshow, where it was converted it to DSD and mastered on the Sony Sonoma workstation. Canto das Aguas is due for an August release. "In our experience, what people like about high-resolution SACD is the format's warmth and clarity," said Airshow founder and chief engineer David Glasser. "It seems to pack the emotional punch people often find lacking in digital formats." In addition to mastering contemporary audiophile recordings, Airshow Mastering has worked on some of the epochal restoration projects of recent times, including the Grammyô-winning reissue of Harry Smith's seminal Anthology of American Folk Music (Smithsonian Folkways) and the acclaimed Screamin' and Hollerin' the Blues: The Worlds of Charley Patton (Revenant Records). The company operates studios in Springfield, Virginia, as well as Boulder.
